Miss Hambrick
Grade 1

The goal of 1st grade is for students to become independent learners who:
  1. Think, question and communicate
  2. Gain and apply knowledge
  3. Work and contribute to the classroom in meaningful, purposeful ways

Grade 1 curriculum is a comprehensive program that consists of both core subjects and related arts classes. Holy Family Academy adheres to not only the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards, but also the Diocese of Metuchen Standards. Most of the school day is made up of Language Arts since it encompasses multiple areas of focus - Reading, Phonics, Spelling, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Grammar and Usage. Science and Social Studies have a minimal role within our core subjects requiring 30 minutes a week. The related arts subjects include: Computers, Spanish, Art, Music, Physical Education and Library.

Assessment includes but is not limited to observation, tests, homework, class work, performance assessments, small group work, centers and individual formal screenings.

Homework is given for the purposes of reinforcement of a lesson or set of lessons taught during the school day. It is not meant to introduce a new concept. If a child is struggling with homework or taking a long time to complete it please contact me immediately. Generally, homework should take no more that 30 minutes. In addition, students are expected to read or be read to for up to 20 minutes nightly. Homework is given Monday - Thursday. Homework, at the first grade level, is also meant to teach responsibility and time management for future success in your child's school career.

Discipline: "Champion Choice Makers"
  1. Students are accountable for the choices they make.
  2. Good choices lead to rewards and positive reinforcement.
  3. Poor choices lead to consequences.
  4. Students are continually praised for the good choices they make.

Fishbowl Friday
  1. When a student is "caught" setting a good example, they'll place their name on a ticket and drop it into the fishbowl.
  2. On Fridays, 5 names will be chosen to receive a "special" prize.
  3. The more tickets you have the better your chances are to win.

Birthdays
  1. We enjoy celebrating birthdays in 1st grade. Please contact me prior to your child's birthday so we can make arrangements.
  2. Summer birthdays will be celebrated throughout June.
  3. Please keep it simple and able to be self-served. No sheet cakes!

W.I.L.D.C.A.T.S. Binder
  1. Serves as an organized communication tool for home-to-school
  2. Needs to be checked NIGHTLY and returned every day
  3. Should be kept net and tidy
  4. If you have written a note for me, you must remind your child to inform me
  5. No drawing or doodling in the binder
  6. Do not remove papers from your binder unless it's in the "Keep at HOME" section
