In the fourth grade class every member is important. To carry out Christ's mission the students are taught that every person has special talents given by God. We work together in a spirit of kindness and mutual respect. The values of faith, hope in God, and charity permeate all that we do.
Academically, the fourth grade curriculum adheres to the guidelines of the Diocese of Metuchen and the N.J. State Core Curriculum Standards.
Religion focuses on dogma as well as moral theology. Studying Scripture is an important component of the class. Ultimately, the students are taught to live as Jesus would like them to live in a spirit of friendship and forgiveness.
Social Studies is the study of the geography and history of N.J.
In Science the areas of Earth Science, the Human Body, and Physical Science are explored.
The basis of all four mathematical operations, as well as, measurement, fractions, decimals, and problem solving are covered in the Math program.
Language Arts includes reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary. Grammar skills are taught and applied to all written work.
Students are encouraged to think through solutions in all areas. They enjoy the study of the Spanish language, Physical Education, Art, and Computer Technology.
The students utilize a program called Writing Roadmap which is a computer based program on which they submit their creative writing to be evaluated and scored. Another of our interesting activities is participation in Celebrate NJ! It is a grass roots movement to help the students learn about all the great things going on in our state. Through research and writing they explore areas of personal interest. Their work is submitted along with the work of thousands of other N.J. fourth grade students, and "The Best of the Best" are chosen to attend awards ceremonies held throughout the state in the Spring. Holy Family Academy is proud to say that our work has resulted in award winners for every year of our participation. As a bonus, all students are treated to a Somerset Patriots' baseball game. We study N.J. government in Social Studies as well as the Revolutionary War. To culminate our studies, we visit the N.J. State House in Trenton for a tour and a class on how a bill becomes a law. We also visit The Barracks Museum for a step back in time to experience the retelling of the story of The Battle of Trenton.
Fourth Grade at Holy Family is a very challenging, exciting, and wonderful experience. By the end of the year, the students are well prepared to move on to Grade 5.
